As part of the current Service Specification with London Borough of Waltham Forest, HHTS have been asked to consider taking on pupils as part of a traded agreement if they do not meet the medical needs criteria but may benefit from home teaching.
Through this provision, staff have developed expertise in working with pupils with ASC, with mental health needs, with anxiety and with longer-term health issues. HHTS has taken referrals from the Virtual School as well as local schools and alternative provisions.
The Hospital and Home Teaching Service can offer term-time lessons in core subjects (prioritising English and Maths) plus additional subjects (i.e. ICT, Art and Food Technology) where appropriate. The average offer is three lessons a week delivered by teachers and/or HLTA but this can vary according to the needs fo the child.
Guidance on topics must be provided by the current educational provision whose duty it remains to ensure education for their pupil.
There must always be a second adult present in the home.
We will consider all requests for input from HHTS. Criteria for decision-making include:
- whether we have the expertise needed to support the pupil;
- whether we have staff available to deliver lessons;
- whether appropriate support is in place to support steps forward.
Some decisions will be made at the information-sharing stage and others will be made following a home visit.
Please feel free to contact the head of service to discuss any potential referral.
